Study of a Bumblebee on Lavender in Provence, France 2011

what where when why
While walking with my wife and two daughters through a field of lavender in the south of France, I found this bumblebee busy at work.
My inspiration for this photograph comes from my love of impressionism, particularly the works of 19-th century painters like Camille Pissarro, Georges Seurat, Claude Monet and—of course—Vincent van Gogh. These artists imagined new ways of seeing the world around them, and I strive to do the same.
I hope you, too, enjoy this beauty found in the briefest of moments and smallest of places.
how
I captured him with my Nikon D7000 and Nikkor VR lens at 200 mm focal length and with an aperture of f/5.6. Ultra-high resolution photography can reveal heretofore unperceived detail. When combined with artful cropping and thoughtful enlargement techniques, small photos can take on an ethereal, painterly quality and leave a big impression. Printed at 16" × 20", this photo is 460 dots-per-inch. Pin-sharp yet buzzing with life.
